: People of the future gather in the square to destroy the painting, but one boy succumbs to the charm of a masterpiece.
The year is supposedly 2061, although no one knows for sure. Holiday. In the main square from five o'clock the line is going. Boy Tom also has been waiting in line since early morning. A man standing behind tries to take the place of a boy, but a man standing by the name of Grigsby intercedes in front of him.
These people can’t wait to take a look, or rather ... spit in the picture. Grigsby explains to Tom that man is so constituted - he hates what killed him. And according to most people, the Past destroyed them.
Tom recalls the holidays in which he was able to participate: burning books, destroying the last car ...
The boy asks Grigsby about Civilization, he replies that she will not return. Among the crowd is a man who sees in it the good sides. He predicts that a brainy person will appear, whose soul lies to the beautiful, and that he will return the old, limited, “patched up” Civilization.
Finally, the turn comes to them. Tom is fascinated by the woman in the picture. He cannot force himself to spit on her, but Grigsby does it with pleasure. Tom finds out the name of this picture - "Mona Lisa."
The woman in the picture smiled mysteriously and sadly, and Tom, responding to her look, felt his heart pounding, and music seemed to ring in his ears.
Horse makes a statement that the painting is handed over to local residents for destruction. The boy is forced out of the crush. The distraught crowd rushes to the picture and starts tearing it to pieces - the old women chew on the canvas, the men break the frame.
One Tom stands, quiet, in the middle of this whistle. In his hand he squeezes a piece of canvas. Grigsby calls out to him, but the boy, sobbing, rushes away. At sunset, he reaches home. The family had already gone to bed, the father promises to sort out in the morning with his son who was hanging around.
Tom, too, lies down and looks at a piece of canvas in the moonlight. It depicts a smile. Affectionate, kind and wonderful.
