(372 words) To this day, the actual and well-known comedy “Woe from Wit” written by the great Russian writer A.S. Griboedov is considered a high-level work. Griboedov set himself the task of showing the life, behavior and being of the nobles of the early 19th century. In this comedy, Griboedov describes in detail the characteristic features of the characters, whose behavior and way of thinking help us plunge into the life of the then society with great understanding.
In this work, one of the most important and memorable characters in the context of the life of rich sections of the population is Sofya Pavlovna Famusova. She was born in the family of a wealthy landowner, therefore she is a member of the high society. A young and beautiful girl is trained in the correct behaviors, while performing household duties. Sophia Pavlovna’s rather remarkable feature is the desire to improve herself through reading French writers and playing the piano.
Life surrounded by the elite, the fact that it grew up in a wealthy family, affected the character of the heroine. She was quite a brave and bright personality, knew how to lie and hypocrite if necessary. The proof is that the feelings that Alexander Chatsky had for Sofya Pavlovna were one of the main reasons for the suffering of the protagonist of the work. He liked her, she was not like other Moscow young ladies.
Upon arriving in Moscow, Chatsky noticed the changes that Sophia underwent under the influence of others. In her thoughts she built the image of an ideal life partner, embodied in Molchalin. Feelings lead to the suffering of the heroine herself, since the goals of Molchalin were to achieve high ranks. Life taught Sophia a lesson, since Molchalin was there only to defend his interests. At the same time, she is not eager to be with Chatsky. The events taking place in the work lead her only to the fact that the girl suffers the most.
She wasn’t very well versed in people, because she thought about people with character templates from French novels. It was literature that had a significant influence on it, developing sensuality and sentimentality in it. It is all those features that, in her opinion, should be possessed by the hero of her novel lead her attraction to Molchalin, who reminded her of the heroes of the readings. She lived primarily with feelings, despite the fact that Molchalin is wretched and miserable by nature.
Griboedov painted precisely a dramatic image. At the very beginning, she was somewhat similar to Chatsky, however, over time, she became his opponent. That is why the character Sophia is one of the most unusual and original images of a woman in Russian literature.
